I have an HP deskjet 940C, connected via parallel port to
(either) a Dell PC or a Toshiba laptop, both running XP.
I alternate between the PC and the laptop, and the
problem happens when connected to either one.

The printer spits out a nearly blank page, most often
with just a letter U on it, at various times, and
according to certain changes in the state of the
computer. For example, when power management kicks in, or
just when starting up.

What setting in XP causes this; it never happened with
any other operating systems.

Jeff, I have exactly the same problem. When starting to print it spits out a nearly blank page first with only 10 small arrows in the top left corner (just enough so I can't ust that page). So after each printing session I have to stick that ruined page back on top of the paper in the tray so I don't waste paper.
I wasn't always like this but I don't remember what happened that caused it
