Most people set their news readers show unread messages only, so no, a lot
of people would NOT have been able to see the original post as well as the
non-quoting reply.

Besides, it's usenet custom to quote.

Below huh?? On my newsreader that would mean the original post came
AFTER the post I replied to.

Many people , such as myself, may not have read the original post if
it didn't have a subject line that sparked any interest, Many also
don't notice who wrote a specific message and wouldn't recognize a new
thread from a certain author. There could be many reason why a person
would miss the original post. Which is why quoting is customary. So,
do us all a favor and pull your head out of ass and shut up.
