Extra drive letter for HD

P

PadarJohn

I have a Lenovo laptop running XP-Pro (SP2).

Sometime after the last updates (5/08) a 2nd drive letter (I:)
associated with my hard drive suddenly appeared. I claims to have the
same free/used/total space as the regular C: drive. I haven't been
able to figure out where it came from or how it got there.

The only update to get installed recently was KB950749, the security
update for the Jet database engine. I haven't installed or updated any
applications in the weeks leading up to this change. Our IT people
haven't approved SP3 yet.

MOUNTVOL /L only shows the normal C: and D: (dvd drive).

The Properties dialogs are identical, except the new one doesn't have
a Quota tab.

Interestingly, someone else I know who also has a Lenovo laptop has
also seen this issue. I haven't seen it anywhere else.

What is this mysterious drive, and how do I get rid of it?

I sugest that you have a look around before 'getting rid of it'. To start use
explorer to see what is supposed to be on the drive - any programs that you do
not want to lose.
You could also right click on I: and look at properties and let us know what is
there. If you are the adminstrator you could go to Start/Settings/Control
Panel/Administrative tool/Computer Management/Disk Management. In there you will
find the information about your extra disk. Also if you know your way around,
BIOS would also give you some information.

Anyway that is how I would start

It's not a "real" drive. Explorer doesn't show any files or folders on
it. Given that it
appears to think it's the same partition as the C: drive I'm reluctant
to see what
happens if I actually try to copy a file to it.

Already did that. Re-read my post.

Been there. Done that. Sorry, forgot to mention it. It doesn't show up
under Disk Management.

Not a BIOS issue. It's not there if I boot into Safe mode.

Any idea how to look for it in the registry?
