I just installed a pair of 10/100 Mbps adapters to make it easy to
swap files between two machines. They came with a three-wire cable
(about 30cm long) that connects to the pc board. The very sparse
instruction sheet doesn't mention the cable and I have no idea what
it's for.

They are made by Gigafast and use the RealTek RTL8139/810X chip.

Anybody know what the cable is for?

Thanks!

Sounds like an extra feature connector - Wake On LAN maybe?

Martin.

WOL (wake on LAN).

Yes, wake on lan (WOL). Many modern boards don't need this feature if
the BIOS is set correctly to wake from that device, will work without
the cable.
