extra connectivity icon in system tray

yesterday, an extra connectivity icon appeared in my system tray. It doesn't
light up indicating activity and I have checked my network connections in
control panel and no new ones are reported. I thought it was a fluke that
happened when everything loaded, but after rebooting, it is still there
today. When I mouse over it, it doesn't provide a bubble explaining what it
is, and if I go into taskbar properties, it isn't presenting there. I
haven't installed any new software.

How do I fix this?
Thanks,
Sue

do you have a router? if you click it/open it, what happens?

Hi Barb,
I do have a router - for VOIP. When I click on it, it shows very little
activity occurred. I tried closing everything then I loaded "What's Running"
and it showed me that it is a svchost item. After going through all that, I
rebooted and it is gone. I also checked my users and there was only my one.
Very bizarre. I checked Windows Services also, and nothing unexpected was
there, or loading in MSConfig.

If you have an idea of what may have caused it, that will help, in case it
happens again.
many thanks,
Sue

it is likely a UPnP discovered Internet Gateway Connection. If you
see it again, open the Network window. Does it show there? On the
left pane, does it read Show UPnP icons or Hide... (this is from
memory on XP).

One more thing, do you have a firewire port on this XP machine?

Hi Barb,
no firewire port. I will open up the network connections dialog should it
happen again. I did browse the connections and no new ones were presented,
but I wasn't in the actual network connections area, so I will do that next
time. I may be back!
Many thanks for your help,
Sue
