I have some external usb2 hard drives that came Fat32. I converted them
with the convert /fs:ntfs command. Windows 2000 and XP machines read them
fine in our office, but any that are tried outside (with XP or 2000) of the
office, they will not read. Why is this?

I have setup hundreds of external USB 2 drives and have never encountered
your problem. Of course, I have never had to convert the file system. What
happens if you use Device Manager to delete the existing partition and then
recreate it and format it as NTFS?

And what do you mean by "they will not read"? Do the outside machines see
the disks but generate read errors when they try to access them? Do the
outside machines not see the disks at all? Do the outside machines see the
disks, but don't see any data on 'em? Or is it something altogether
different from any of the above?

I know someone who is trying to format in NTFS
on a USB 2 external hdd. BUT it wont work.

HOW exactly or what steps, do you have
to do for it to work?? And can USB 2
hdd's be used as bootdisks?? I think this
guy is trying to put an operating system on his.
