I have a problem with my external drive, vista picks it up but then explorer
freezes and the machine does nothing until i turn it off then all the windows
i have tried to open when the device is plugged in appear... The drive never
came with drivers and it worked ok in xp pro. any suggestions..?

USB device problems have been in Vista all along so far. Make sure you
report the make and model of the enclosure in your feedback to MS.

Naturally you want to make sure you try different usb cables along the way.
Vista is more demanding of hardware than XP and it is possible a supplier
snuck in an older 1.1 compliant cable on you.

Also, if your USB ports are on a PCI card then try moving the card to a
different slot.

USB Cables aren't version specific. The Pin-out for USB1(.1) & 2.0
are the same. It's something of the marketing ploy similar to "Monster"
cables for audio when you see "USB 2.0 Compliant" on the cable
package. Also USB 2.0 devices all internally route to the single USB
enhanced controller - moving to another socket won't make any dif.
Only USB 1(.1) devices become associated with socket/hub and
moving them to another socket may be a diagnostic approach.
Better to check the Hub & Host Controller in Device Manager and
note the power consumption and bandwidth used. The bandwidth is
available on the advanced tab of the Controller and Power from the
hub Power (TAB).

I was referring to the possibility of faulty ports. In the case of the PCI
slots, the last slot may have different characteristics than the other
slots. I have had machines where that was by design.

Hey there guys, cheers for the response
, the usb ports are fine, and the drive worked with xp pro, its a laptop
system im running vista on. Ill check out the ports in device manager. I have
found usb being a bit of a pain with vista, as my pen drive works ok, but
sometimes it can be sluggish in copying even small files. Any ideas?
