External USB Hard Drive-format needed

I put together an external case and a maxtor had. XP found it, but it does
not appear in my computer as a device. what am I doing wrong?

I've had the exact same problem and fixed
it by assigning a drive letter. I used Partition Magic,
but Disk Management will do the same thing.
ControlPanel/Administrative Tools/Computer
Management/Storage/DiskManagement
 
USB device found under XP..ready for use..but no drive letter
designation...so does drive have to be formatted out of the box?

My WD had to be formatted before I used it. But WD's Data Lifeguard program
worked fine for that. Fortmatted it in NTFS and made two partitions. All
went well and the partitions showed up as drives H: and I:.
