I have a Western Digital USB 2.0 Hard Drive connected to my Winxp based
computer and when I Turn Off or put the computer in Standby mode, the
Hard Drive keeps on whirling.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Dan

Hi

To play safe, I would suggest you to use the safely remove icon to stop the ext. HDD and then switch off the power on the ext. HDD rack

Thanks but there IS no switch on the external hard drive. Of course I
can pull out the power cord on the external drive every time I want the
computer to hibernate or shut down, and then reverse process each time I
turn on the computer or bring it out of hibernation.

My question to be more specific is: is there a way to have the driver
or system do this as part of the normal shutdown/hibernation/standby
process as with the internal drives, fans, etc. *without human
intervention*?

Thanks,

Dan

Try the OFF switch on the back

Now WHY didn't I think of that? Um, there IS no off switch, but I look
forward to your next helpful suggestion.

To clarify, and as I wrote in my last message: is there a way to have
the driver or system do this as part of the normal
shutdown/hibernation/standby process as with the internal drives, fans,
etc. and *without* human intervention?

Dan,

I have an Iomega 40GB USB 2.0 ext HDD and it too has no off switch. I bought
(at a hardware store) a small switch that plugs into my power strip that lets
me turn the Iomega ON or OFF whenever I want. After I power up the drive, then
I plug in the USB cable and the drive is recognized. I then use the sys tray
icon to "stop" the Iomega when done and remove the USB cable, then hit the
switch added to the power strip to power down the HDD.

I have not tried it with hibernation as I don't use that at all. I could try
it with my laptop - maybe I will if I get some time although I usually use it
plugged in nearly all the time.
