This PC with ( XP Home, Srv Pak 3 ) has an External USB 80 GIG backup drive
that is not working. This COMPUSA drive was working prefect. It is 4 yrs
old.

Then the HP PC was replaced TODAY with an eMachine. Now the eMachine sees
the Drive Letter but when it is clicked a message pops up, "This drive is
not formatted."

In Windows Live One Care it does not see the drive to configure the BACKUP.
When reconnected to the original HP PC it works fine.

This PC is a Gateway-MS-7142-1.00
XP Home, Srv Pak 3 all / updates current
1.80-gigahertz AMD-Sempron
1 Gig RAM
100 Gig HD with 80 Gig free

New Orleans Novice,
1. Did you "preset" the Drive Letters on the External HDD when it was attached
to the HP PC?
So you your Drive letters would be something like this:
C:\= Operating System
D:\= CD/DVD-ROM
E:\= Partition1 on Ext HDD
F:\= Partition2 on Ext HDD
etc....

2. On the new PC, does it have a 2nd CD/DVD-ROM, Hard Drive, or Multi Card
Reader installed in it?
C:\= Operating System
D:\= First Active Drive on the 2nd Internal HDD
E:\= CD/DVD-ROM1
F:\= CD/DVD-ROM2 or Card Reader Slot1
etc....

What you might have is a conflict with drive letters assignment. You may need to
reassign the Drive letters for your CD/DVD-ROM Drives, to a letter further down
the alphabet. I usually assign the CD/DVD-ROM to the letter "Q", when first
setting up a PC, before installing any programs. This is a hold over process I
learned when using a Packard Bell PC, back in the '90s Changing drive letter on
these devices may cause a conflict when reading CD/DVDs, and will have to use
the "Browse" feature, to find a file on the CD.

If you have access to the HP PC, and can attached the Ext HDD to it, try the
following:
1. With the Ext HDD attached, and all drives showing in My Computer.
2. Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Computer Management> Under Storage> Disk
Management>
3. One by one> Right click each drive of the Ext HDD> Change Drive Letter> Start
with letter "M" or a letter further down the line that does not show on the
E-Machine, when the Ext HDD is not attached to it. Repeat for each Partition on
the External HDD.
4. Reattach Ext HDD to the E-Machine and see if the Ext HDD partitions, are now
visible under My Computer.
5. At this point, if it was me, I would repeat steps #2 & #3 on the E-Machine
and change the Drive Letter assignment for the CD/DVD-ROM(s) to "Q" or "R". This
way these devices will not cause a conflict with drive letter assignments in the
future, such as attaching a camera or a flash drive to the PC. Your choice.

New Orleans Novice,
Not smarter than you good folks from LA. I just went through the same problem a
while back, when I used a USB IDE HDD enclosure with some SPARE HDDs I had, and
tried to get some files off them. And found I could not see the individual
partitions on them. Pull some grey hairs out of the top of my head, and finally
figured it out. LOL!

I think my instructions may have been "long winded", you may have just needed to
change the Drive settings for your Hardware devices, such as CD/DV-ROMS, and
maybe Card Reader, if installed. Then Windows would have found the right Drive
letter assignments for the HDDs. So you did not have to change the Ext HDD
settings, they would have been automatically assigned by Windows, but I was not
sure.

Remember using printers/scanners with Card readers, USB connected Cameras, USB
flash drives, etc..., may change the Drive letter assignment temporarily while
connected or turned on, to devices installed on your PC.
