hello

I have a extternal storage device linked to my computer via USB. I can find it with the device manager and it should work according to it. I don't see it mentioned as a removable harddisk like it was before I moved the hard disk (20G) and put it back in. Since then nothing shows and it looks as if I lost all my data. Now I think it is not configured as a harddisk anymore for whatever reason. Can I configure this device as an HD again and how should I do this? And if so, will I loose all the data wich is on it
Is there a way to recover the data before I reconfigure

I have a lot of valuable data on that disk so you would mean a lot if someone could help me. Thank

walter

Did you buy this as a complete unit or build it yourself

Most external units, even a bare bones case come with a user manual and installation CD

Generally the CD and drivers are not required

Is your PC configured with USB 1 or USB 2. If there are USB 2 adapters [it may also have USB 1 as well] make sure it is attached to one of them. If you have a USB2 port, but it does not show as USB 2 capable, ensure that you have XP service pack 1 installed and then also add

Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1 (KB822603
Download size: 341 KB, < 1 minut
This update addresses the "Availability of the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update" issue in Windows XP and is discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article 822603. Download now to install the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 update. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer

If it is USB 2 capable already, go on

When you attach the USB cable, does Windows detect the new hardware. If it is identified, then check in My Computer to see if the hard drive is shown

If no hard disk is identified, go to Disk Management [Start>Control Pane>Administrative Tools>Computer Management

Look to see if there is a Hard Disk shown there: If no partition or volume information is displayed, yet a disk is present, then highlight the drive and right click, choose format. AFter format right click again and choose Change Drive Letter.

After this is done you may need to restart the PC, but it should show up in my computer.
