I want to do file sharing for 4 laptops that are in different cities. We all
have internet and Windows XP Pro. Can this be done?
Regards, Paul

Thanks Malke. I chased quite a few links in the google search, but it didn't
quite have what I'm looking for. Maybe I need to rephrase the question. I
want to go over the internet rather than a dedicated or dial up phone line.
For hardware, do I need a router or switch? Do I need a server? or...
Because we all have broadband internet, is there software built into Windows
XP Pro or a softswitch and a way to do file sharing without a dedicated
server?

I have an old desktop that I suppose I could recommission into a server.
Does it require Windows server software or is there something built into XP
Pro.

In lieu of a server, then I suppose we're going peer-to-peer. What kind of
set up would that take. Can anyone point me to a step-by-step guide?

Thanks,
Paul

Requirements:

1) Broadband Internet with high/no limit transfers

2) Static IP address or Dynamic DNS service (like www.dyndns.org.)

3) one Router with VPN end-point services, per site, like:
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...nksys/Common/VisitorWrapper&lid=1440822279B08

4) Unique IP network sub net mask set up per site
example: 192.168.1.xxx
2.xxx
3.xxx
4.xxx

5) NetBIOS of TCP/IP settings on router and in the 4 XPs. Otherwise,
shared folders will be accessed by \\192.168.1.xxx\folder instead of \
\Site1\folder

Your list of requirements was to the point. Thank you so much.
I appreciate the other guys who responded previously and provided background
information.

Been setting up these "WAN" (Wide Area Networks) for some time. With
these steps, your network should be 'secure.'
