External IP address changes after VPN connection

I have just set up an trial VPN with one of my customers using my own PC to
connect to their server. The moment I establish a connection my own external
IP address changes to the external address of the server to which I connect
via VPN.

I only discovered this when my address registered with zoneedit kept
changing for no apparent reason until I discovered that the address being
recorded was that of the remote site to which I was connecting. If it had not
been for this, I probably would have been blissfully unaware of what was
happening.

The VPN is only being used to access one specific folder on the remote server

To get around the problem, I issue a route delete/add command after the VPN
is established and this appears to correct the situation.

My question is: is there any way of keeping the external address unchanged
without issuing a route command after connection has been established?

AFAIK, I would say disable the defaultroute in the properties of the
IP-Protokol on the VPN-Connection Item You use to connect.

Hope This helps

Alan,
Whenever you make a VPN connection you acquire an additional IP address.
By default, you also change your default gateway setting to the "received"
IP address (which really means that your default gateway is now the VPN
connection). This is discussed in KB254231 .

I figured that out when it happened. What I cant understand is why the
default gateway would change. That said I also discovered that you can set it
up not to change the gateway. I am just perplexed as to why the default
setting is to change the gateway.
