I am trying to transfer files from my old computer hard drive using an usb
2.0 enclosure. My new computer is running Vista, the old hard drive is
running xp. When I plugged it in, my computer sees it as a mass storage
device, but I cannot access nor see any files on the old hard drive. I'm
getting kinda frustrated, I tried to link the two computers via ethernet that
didn't work. My old computer has motherboard issues and the usb ports don't
work. And it will not burn dvds it errors out, so I couldn't transfer my info
that way. Am I doing something wrong here? Can someone give me some advise?

Please go to:
Start > right click – Computer > Storage > Disk Management.
When the right hand window opens: Right click on your drive > Change Drive
letter…
And you drive should mount.

I tried that, I can see the external drive in disk management. But when I
right click on the drive, the only option that it will allow me to choose is
delete volume.

Was this your old C: drive? D: drive? Did it have any compression or
encryption on it. Any AntiVirus s/w on it? Did you disable that before
removing it? What was its format properties? What size is the drive? Some
drives (350 GB range) have too great of a capacity for the enclosure.

The old drive was a c: drive. I don't think it had any compression, it had
norton on it, I did disable it however it was set to start on next startup.
It is a 120 gig dell hd. not sure about format properties. It has sata
connectors.

There is something wrong with the way the drive is installed in the external
enclosure or the drive itself. I have used this trick many times to do what
you are trying to do.
If the drive is functional then it does not matter whether is was your
c/boot drive or any other drive in the old computer. If everything is
working properly the drive should be readable.
Why don't you try to install the old drive in your new computer using its
EIDE or SAT connectors--that should solve the problem if it is the external
enclosure.
However, if your hard drive is dying then it, and not the motherboard, may
have been the source of your problems.

Can you put it back in your old drive and use:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
to get rid of the last vestiges of Norton. and.
When you saw the drive in the Disk Manager, did it show up formatted as a
Basic or Dynamic Drive? Please check.

uninstall norton first?

yes, remove the Norton AV...good sign that it showed up as basic! It should
mount! So, you're sure it has data on it...and when you see it in Disk
Manager it has a drive letter assigned to it?

You said earlier when you saw it in Disk Manager "the only option that it
will allow me to choose is delete volume." Well why don't we go ahead and
do that. (hold you breath). I don't think this will erase data. Then
disconnect, and then reconnect the drive and see if you get more options in
Disk Manager.

It has data, pictures, music, videos, etc. I can access all of it in the old
computer. In the disc manager it was listed in a box for one of the usb
ports. But it did not have a letter next to the icon in the left hand side of
the box.It was seperated into two portions of the info. I think it was 31
gig in one, I think it said something like esia, and the other was like 111
gig.

That would sound right. I'd go ahead and delete it and re-mount it as I
said before by assigning a new letter. I don't think we'll hurt it but I
sure wish you had a back up of it.

I had the same problem. I thought I was the only one or that there was
something wrong with my new laptop. I will try steps recommended by
Bob F and will see.

Thanks Marianne
