External HD won't work

My PC has a 20 gig HD in it so I bought a 250 gig internal HD and put it in a
case to use it as an external HD..(don't ask why? lol) Anyways anytime I
try to load stuff to it or even try to open it ,it asks me to put in a disc.I
checked the hardware and it tells me it's working properly.
P.S. I'm useing XP Pro

...and what kind of preparation did you perform to the external
harddrive, other than just plug it in? If all you did was plug it in, your
computer is guessing what this thing might be, and it is obviously guessing
wrong. Gotta give it credit, tho', as it could be thinking malfunctioning
isa device--remember those? (Format?) s
