External HD - is speed an issue?

When using an external hard drive for backups, does it matter whether
it's 5400 or 7200 RPM? CompUSA has the US Logic 60G USB 2 at about 50
bucks after rebates, but it's 5400 RPM. Is the speed anything to be
concerned about? Any other concerns about this drive? Thanks!

Yes.

Depends on how much you care about the speed.

The other consideration is how adequately the drive is cooled.
Some external drives have fans, some dont. Some have stupid
plastic boxes that can see the drives getting pretty hot without fans.

Not necessarily, depends entirely on the harddrive in question.
Some 5400 rpm drives, optimized for sequential transfers,
are equally fast as their 7200rpm counterparts.

If there is a difference then on long transfers, like with imageing,
it may become noticeable, but then, who times his coffeebreak, right?
