External HD Help

Hi

I have an external hard drive(with 2 internal drives) connected to my XP
Home computer which has been working fine for over a year. I haven't move it
or messed with it yet several days ago one of the internal drives(I had been
using it to hold my backup files)suddenly said it was not formatted and
needed to do so.I felt this was a simple procedure and won't take long,so I
proceeded to do a format,that was about 3 days ago.Everytime I try a quick
or long format I get the same Windows message,"Windows was unable to
complete the format". Can someone tell me why and how t correct this?

I will GUESS the drive has died and needs to be replaced
