Hello,

I am a bit short of hard disc resource on my laptop, so I would like to buy
an additionnal external HD.
My computer has Firewire and USB 1.
Is it possible to work without problem with an external drive and MM2 (keep
and manage collections relating to external HD files, save and import dv-avi
content to/from an external drive, etc.).
Advices about that would be usefull to me.
Thank you in advance.

Michel

Yes no problem at all. Perhaps best to get one which has both usb and
firewire connections, but do not get a usb only one.
When using firewire you can daisy chain the devices together, ie laptop
connected to the ext hdd which in turn is also connected to the cam. You'll
get full control of the cam and be able to capture direct to the ext hdd.

Definitely get one with a FireWire port,
and use that to connect to your PC. It
will be MUCH faster than your USB 1.x
port.

But just to keep more options available
for your next PC, I agree with Graham
that you might want to get one that has
both FireWire and USB 2.0 ports.

Hi Michel

I run an external USB 2 drive from my notebook for my AV projects with very
few problems. The only annoying consequence I have found is that if I start a
project on my notebook and then continue work on the same project on another
machine the project will not let you connect to the source files unless the
external drive is also connected to the 'other' machine (even if the files
are on the 'other' machine on the HD or a CD-ROM).

If you only intend to use your notebook, in my experience you will not have
a problem.

Using USB 2 or firewire Bob ? I can do it using firewire, but never have
been succesful with USB 2. I can move files and edit them using USB2.
