External Harrdrive Questions

hi I got this external harrdrive

dont know much abt it except its slow


its a maxtor 300gb
the file format on it is fat32
ive just been trying to copy over some files
its so bloody slow
im guessing its usb1.0
neway to chek this?


also if i formatted it using the ntfs file system do u think it will be quicker?
and last question if someone who is using either windows me or windows 2000 with a fat32 file system will they be able to view the drive when it will be a ntfs file system?

sorry for way ive written its rainiing v heavy hear have to be quick as i fear my net will go down v soon.

umm thats the most important question
because i just formatted it using disk management in win xp
now i see i cant convert it back to fat32!!!

its cuz i want to give the drive tosome1 to give em some files.
thas what this is all abt!"
 
i dont think changing the file system will improve transfer speeds at all, i think the thing that is letting you down is the interface
 
what drive is it ? it may be high speed USB 2 compatible but plugged into a USB 1 port on your PC

well heres the drive


its a maxtor 6 L300R0 USB device
its powered by main and ive plugged it into a usb2.0 port
im sure the port is 2.0

think i might have sorted it

there was an unknown device in device manager
i found that driver and updated it


the speeds are a lot fast think its def 2.0 now!

thing is i just plugged it into my other machine
thats def usb2.0 ie the usb port is on the motherboard
speeds are very good well impressed


see the other machine has a pci slot with a 2 usb 2.0 slots on them
so does that mean i wont get the full speed because its going through pci?

just not sure on that
well still the files do copy but they take ages!!!
