There are so many different kinds of external hard drives out there and was
wondering if someone could help me out in trying to find one. I don't really
know anything about them other than they store things from your computer.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Kay:

The model external hard drives depens on the kind of external port you may
have avail, in your computer . Normaly they are USB, Firewall and in some
cases SATA. Sometimes you can by a enclosure and add your out HDD.

Added to that go for one which has it's own PSU since they can otherwise put
a drain on the USB ports.
Also make sure it's got a cooling fan in it since they tend to run warm.
That one's from personal experience having had a drive fail.

You can buy the what I call all in one models...where the HD is already in a
case and usually connects to your computer by means of a USB cable or the
newer ones by an E_SATA cable..high price. Most older systems have USB
connections.
or you can buy the case and HD seprately and install the HD into the
case...at which point it gets tricky.
The HD connects to the internal components of the Case...which can be SATA
or EIDE ..and they must match.A SATA HD will not connect in an EIDE
case..and vice versa.Usually an EIDE Case/HD would connect to your system
with a USB cable.
A SATA HD/Case can connect with either a E(for external) SATA cable or with
a E_SATA cable or a USB Cable. If your computer has SATA some cases come with
a Rear Connection Panel that you install and connect to a SATA connector on
the mobo. This creates that E-SATA port.
Only you know what your system has ...decisions!! decisions!!

Go for one with a usb connection and preferably its own power supply. I got a
maxtor 320gb drive for £79.99 from pcworld.co.uk which works great. You can
get this drive for a few pounds cheaper if you buy online.
