I had a old computer running Windows XP home. When it finally died, I bought
a new computer. I took the hard drive from my old computer and using a
mobile disk shell, I hooked the old drive up via USB 2 as a external storage
device to my new computer. I can access everything on the drive except the
my documents folder. Which of course is where I have all my music that I
want to transfer to my new computer. Can anyone tell me why I am only unable
to access this folder? And what I need to do to regain access to it. Any
help would really be appreciated. I will check back here, or you can email
me at (e-mail address removed).

thanks in advance

Hello Brian
If you look a few posts down, you can see I have the same problem, maybe not
as good explaind as you have.
Here is the answer I had from Jupiter Jones:

"Take Ownership, #9 on this link:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/adsecurity.htm

"

There is one problem if you have the XP Home version. To get the rights to
"open" your "my cocuments" folder, XP Home must be started in Safe mode. And
in Safe mode, I can not see the external HD. There is where I am now - and I
will try to hook it up with a PC running on XP professional.

In addition to taking ownership as already mentioned, you may have some
license management for the music that needs to be taken care of too. Check
the help file of your main music program or at the support pages of
wherever you purchase music online for more details.
