I have used without any problems for over a year, a
Western Digital External Hard Drive (USB). All of a
sudden when I tried to access a program on that drive I
got a message that says... "the drive or network
connection is unavailable." When I restart... the screen
is either totally black after XP Start Screen or... if
desktop shows up, the cursor freezes. Only option is to
push "restart." If I unplug hard drive everything works
fine until I plug it in again then screen freezes. What
happened. No power out that I know of. Thanks for any
help. -Pamela-

Hi,

Can you use the ext. HD on other PC?
If the answer is "NO", the file system may be corrupted.
If it is formatted in FAT32, try hook it up to the
primary master IDE and start the computer with a Win98 or
WinME startup disk and run scandisk; hopefully it can fix
the problem.
For NTFS sytem, I don't know what to do.
However, if the data files on the HD is invaluable, the
best way to do is to hand it to data recovery company.

Peter... your reply must have been meant for another
message besides mine. I don't have another computer and I
am only using Windows XP. Thanks anyway.
