I have a hard drive I took out of a laptop that crashed. When I connect it to
my new laptop and try to open the folders I get a message that I don't have
permission. It lets me go thru a series of steps to give myself permission
but with over 5,000 pix of my family that is a lot of steps. Is there a way
to give myself permission to view all folders and files? The hard drive came
out of a laptop with XP and the new pc I am using is Vista

Select folders and apply add yourself as owner. That *should* "trickle
down" to the files within the folders.

If not, open a folder to expose the files. Then click in the portion of the
window where the files are listed and press Ctrl+A or Alt+Edit+Select All.

Next right click on the selected batch of files and use the communal
Properties sheet that will appear to change permissions.
