I added an external hard drive that is 120gbs but my windows says it is
31.4gbs. It has been formated and properties says healthy. The enclosure I
got is Zynet, and the HD is Maxtor. I hope someone can give me a clue as to
why this HD appears to be only 31.4 gigs?

Thanks
George

My disk manager has two new HDD devices showing so I think it is one the
enclosure and the other the maxtor HDD so I guess they are not working
together here. If This is the case where do I get the information I need to
set them together. I did not have to download any drivers for either
device.

Thanks again
George

George,

There may be a jumper on the hard drive to limit the capacity to ~32GB for
legacy support...

Ed Metcalfe.

There was a jumper. I took it off but I have run intoanother problem and
that is to do with the 1394 conect network. I don't know how to config this
if it needs it but I am thinking it may be needed but for now The enclosure
is being recognized but not the maxtor HDD. Is there ever an end to the
new problems..

Thanks George

Merlin,

The only way you can format a hard disk larger than 32 GB with the FAT 32
format in Windows XP is with a 3rd party formatting program or formatting
with a Windows 9X system first. XP does not support formatting FAT32 larger
than 32 GB but will run any size FAT 32 drive formatted in a different
system.

I found the answer to this problem by accident when I had removed the thing
called a jumper. I replaced it in a different set of posts and put it back
together and my computer found the remainder of the drive space. Thanks to
all of you and I hope this can help others.
