I am looking at getting a Maxtor One Touch II 500 GB external hard drive to use
for storing mp3s (I'm looking to convert my over 1000 cd collection to mp3s).
Also I would store jpegs and windows media files. Is this a practical easy to
use solution.? I would rather do this instead of burning them to either cds or
dvds. I have enough clutter in my life.

However, I am not a computer nerd. I can plug and play, download mp3s from
usenet, load software, etc but when it comes to major problems I'm lost.

My current computer is a notebook with windows xp.

Any enlightment on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Bruce

We use one (Smaller drive) for general storage on an at home LAN. Seems to
work well. The advantage to us is that the files are accessable to any of
the pC's. One use is to store recorded videos. DVD storage requirements are
a bit high, so keepers would eventually need to be re-recorded to CD or DVD.
The cable box does have a firewire output that can be used to digitally
record brodcast channels. The cable company implemented "5C" in october 05,
thus killing everything invcluding "record once" 5c encoded channels for
digital recording external to the HD cable box.

I have a 120 gig external drive and must say it works great for storage and
backing up. As long as you have usb 2.0 or firewire to connect it is very
fast and a good solution. I have a half zillion mp3's.

Thanks for your reply Jim. Are your mp3's on the drive easy to pull up and play
when you want to?

Thanks again,
Bruce

I have an external maxtor 160 GB and play my mp3s just fine even when
they are networked from another computer.

I'm going to upgrade to some kind of redundant system as soon as I can
because I wouldn't want to re-rip all those cds if the drive ever fails.
