External Hard Drive problem

I've got a 60G USB external hard drive made by Freecom that's giving me
big problems and I'm wondering if anything can be done. I was away for
the past week and had it unplugged. When I came nack and powered up my
computer and plugged in the external drive, I could access it for only
about two minutes every time before it would cease working.

As of this morning, things seem to have got a lot worse. It stays
connected and accessible, but the names of the files and folders have
been changed into - for want of a better word - gobbledegook. I'm
assuming this means that the drive has been corrupted somehow.

My question is: Is there a way to retrieve my files, and if so, how?

Pretty smart move having just one copy of the files on a drive.

You may be able to get the files back by opening the external drive,
taking the hard drive out and temporarily installing it in the PC.

That may void the warranty if its obvious that you have done that even
if you put the drive back in the external housing to claim on the warranty.

Call technical support and ask them what to do. Ask them if you can
remove the drive in order to mount it on the PC's IDE without voiding
the warranty. If they say OK< have them email a reply to that effect
so you have a hard copy.

Next time get a Western Digital drive with an inexpensive cable
converter and forget about expensive enclosures. Heat kills hard
drives so leave it open where fresh air can circulate around it.
