Help? I have an external hard drive enclosure, which I can put a 3 Gb hard
drive into and it works perfectly. I went out and bought a 120 Gb WD Caviar
Se Drive to replace the 3Gb Hard Drive. Windows XP is recognizing it but it
is not assigning it a drive letter. Can anyone help?

I got it finally to show up as a drive letter using the disk management menu,
but it will not format the drive. The error notice is saying "format did not
complete successfully." The Error that shows up in the event viewer system is
"The driver detected a controller error on \device\harddisk1\d". I am not
sure where to go with this.

OK. How is this enclosure attached to the system? Via USB/Firewire or
directly to an internal IDE/SCSI port on the motherboard or a controller on
the motherboard?

Do you know that the controller to which the drive is attached supports
drives that large?

The external enclosure is connected through USB 2.0. I don't know if the
controller can handle the larger discs. I would think that it would being a
newer product, but it very well could not handle the hard drives considering
I tried two maxtor drives and they did the same thing.

Double check the specs. Different controllers have different break points on
the size of the device they'll support.
