external hard drive not recognized after 20 months of use

I have a maxtor hard drive in a Quick drive case
connected USB to win xp home. The drive has worked well
for over 20 months. Now XP doesn't recognize it. It get
a message that there is no disk in the drive. The maxtor
shows up in device manager as working properly and the
drive letter appears without the computer name. If I try
to access it, "my computer" locks up.

The hard drive works fine on a second machine.
