I own a Hammer Storage external hard drive. It had been working on my
dual-boot computer (XP and openSuse) for a few months. But now, when I
plug it into the computer, windows xp will not recognize the drive,
calls it an unknown device and says that there are no drivers
associated with the drive. I have contacted the manufacturer of the
drive and they think it may be a problem with the OS and suggest I
reinstall XP. I want to be able to fix the problem without having to
go through all that. My other computers are able to read the hard
drive perfectly. I have gone through all the suggestions on the
Microsoft Troubleshooter, but nothing has worked. Is there anyone who
can help? Thanks.

You don't have to reinstall the OS.

This page has a suggestion, which is basically to remove the USB-related
entries from Device Manager, while in Safe Mode.

http://www.usbman.com/Guides/Cleanup Device Manager Safe Mode.htm

Upon reboot, the OS will re-enumerate the hardware, and rebuild the
Device Manager entries.

Also, for fun, try using UVCView and see whether the entry shown
for the connected drive, looks reasonable or not. See the
menu on the right of this web page. This would just be a quick check,
that the hardware is working to some degree.
