I have formatted my external (Maxtor OneTouch USB, 120GB) hard disk as NTFS
for my Windows 2000 system.
All works fine, but is there a handy way to connect this drive to a Windows
98 system (FAT32) if neccessary?

Not without a third-party driver. Visit http://www.sysinternals.com

Thanks, however I couldn't find any information wether NTFS DOS supports USB
drives...

Actually I have been trying the trial of NTFSDOS first. I wasted one evening
making a set of (4!) DOS bootable disks. But the disks wouldn't even boot
for read acces! The booting process just stalled. I'm under the impression
it is rather trashy software.

On the other hand the the floppy disk creator from www.ntfs.com worked right
out of the box and even supports my USB driver! It only lacks writing to
NTFS. I suppose there is no registering this app. for NTFS writing support?

I partitioned my external Maxtor into two mirrored file
systems: NTFS and FAT32. FAT32 will only format 32gig,
NTFS reports a maximun of 137gig, but I was able to format
more. Both partitions must have the same info.

The format wizard has both options.

Now, when I move the external HD from machine to machine,
it's available to all usual Windows OS (depending on
hardwire connections).

It's best to have a Firewire/USB combined external.
