I have an INTERNAL dvd writer that is breaking, according to "experts" in
this newsgroup---e.g., it is opening and closing sluggishly, if at all, and
won't recognize blank dvds for burning purposes. I want to avoid the hassle
of installing another internal.
What're the pros and cons about EXTERNAL drives? I want to get a USB
connected external drive....for burning HOME MOVIES and DATA disks.
Thanks...

I use both an internal and external burner. The only downside of the
external is that it costs alittle more.

To change the internal drive requires 4 screws and two plug
in cables. The job takes about 5 minutes.

Out with the old, in with the bad.

An external DVD writer is OK. Will work equally well with a future Mac.
But always remember that hardware is hardware and Apple gets its parts
just as economically as Dell did for your present system and from the
same or through the same sources. If one wants quality, it might be a
good idea to design and build a custom system or find a custom builder.
