i'm having an issue with my DVD drive.
the drive is supposed to be used internally in a desktop but i want to use
it with a laptop.
the dvd drive is an IDE device.
i got an IDE external adapter so i could use the drive with my laptop.
the adapter lets me connect the DVD drive to my laptop via USB port.
i got it all set up and everything but it is having issues.
it is giving me a code 10.
a code 10 is when a device can not start.
it gives me that error message even when the device is turned on.
the external adapter i got for it gives the drive its own on and of switch.
it will not let me start my pc unless the new device is turned off.
someone help me fix this issue.

i'll be very thankfull for the help.

I assume there is only the one drive on the IDE bus. Did you ensure it was set to Master when you mounted it in the adapter?

Read the manual for the external device [USB] box. Most
times, it is **not** a matter of simply assembling the
box but actually configuring some of the settings and
maybe even installing a file or two to work with the box.

the device uses drivers that are already preinstalled on the PC.

that may be the problem. what should i do if that does not work? i'm just
wondering but how would that fix the issue? the DVD drive was a slave drive
in my old desktop. i hope your seggestion works.

IDE devices have to be connected properly, Master, Slave, proper plugs, etc. If there is only one device on an IDE bus, it has to be a Master. And on a regular IDE cable, the Master is connected to the bus with the end plug on the cable; Slave to the middle plug. There are no guarantees this will work, but your comment indicate that it is a probable cause.

your seggestion did not work.

i'm trying to use the IDE drive with a zd8000.
the drive worked on my 4403us.

the IDE drive, the IDE to usb adapter, and the zd8000 are all new.

what should i do now?

Or that the drivers should already have been pre-installed,
but this might not necessarily be so. Didn't you write in
this thread..."the IDE drive, the IDE to usb adapter, and
the zd8000 are all new." Check that the motherboard drivers
(not the Windows drivers) have been installed for the USB
bus.

Sorry, I thought this would have solved your problem.

Have you tried this drive setup on another machine? Did it work? Duh. You said it worked on your laptop. What are the operating systems on both? Does this machine have the same drivers as your laptop? Could it use them? IIRC, XP doesn't do native DVD, only CD. Everything has to have drivers for DVD. I can't find RW drivers/software for my x64 box. I can do CD-R and DVD-R, just no RW.

i used to use the DVD drive internally in my 4403us. the 4403us is a
desktop. the 4403us is about 3 years old.
they both have Windows XP.
the 4403us has pro edition.
the zd8000 has MCE 2005 edition.

i don't think the drivers are the issue.
i say that because the dvd drive will not even start in the adapter at all.
the adapter starts but not the drive.
the drive started in the 4403us.
the zd8000 meets more of the system requirements for the DVD drive then the
4403us.

the DVD drive is an LG drive. http://www.shentech.com/gsa4163bi.html
i got the IDE to USB adapter at www.cyberguys.com.
http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/searchdetail.asp?T1=163+0178&dept=lch14&search=&child=

before i purchased the adapter i went to the support sites for these devices
and asked them if they would work together. they both said that they would.
i asked them this before i got the laptop and the IDE to USB adapter for the
DVD drive.

the drive does not seem to start at the 'master' or 'slave' settings.

what do you i should do now?

Steven

the drivers are not the issue. trust me. the IDE to usb adapter is starting
but the drive i want to use itself is not starting. the drive worked with
another pc.

yea.
the dvd drive itself is not starting up but the ide adapter is. i have no
idea why this is happening. the dvd drive was working fine when it was in my
desktop. the ide dvd drive is conected to the ide to usb adapter properly. i
know that everything is conected properly because i have done this stuff
before. i have never run into this issue before. i'm just used to working
with laptops and laptop drives that are over 5 years old. all those parts
and devices work perfectly, yet the dvd drive and the ide adapters seem to
have issues and they are not even a month old. i tried lots of things to
get it to work. i tried switching usb ports. i tried switching the 'master'
and 'slave' settings. i tried switching power outlets. none of these things
seem to work. i tried getting support from the people who made the devices
that i am using but they could not help me. i know that the dvd drive works
properly because i used it in another pc. do you have any ideas of how i can
fix this issue?

well i finally got the dvd drive to power up. it was an issue with the
adapter. the device is working now.

i got the drive to work for a bit but it still had issues.
i got it to appear in 'my computer' for once but for some reason the drive
would not eject. now i am having the issue that i had earlier.
please help.
