Can anyone recommend an external dvd burner that uses a firewire
connection?

And while we're at it, why do so few burners have firewire as an
option?

thanks

You could always whip one together yourself.
Make sure that your burner software can handle
a Firewire burner, because I had trouble with
that a couple years ago. I expect coverage is
better now, on the burner software. If your plan
is to use the burner software that comes with the
bare drive, check for Firewire support before you
buy. Otherwise, you might end up buying Nero as well.

That looks very much like my USB HD enclosure. Unfortunately the
controller chip in mine, a JMicron JM20337 (SATA/PATA/USB 2.0, no
firewire), appears to be incompatible with both SiS 7001 OHCI and SiS
7002 EHCI controllers (I tried two different machines, socket 7 and
Athlon XP). The enclosure reads just fine at USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 speeds
in both Windows and DOS, but I can only write a few hundred megabytes
at either speed under either OS before the HD hangs and the controller
times out. The same chip works flawlessly with an Intel EHCI
controller.
