I'm looking for an inexpensive external drive that I can use for automatic
backups and also to sync files from my desktop to laptop. Several drives
seem to be able to do this from their ads, but I have XP on my desktop and
Vista on my laptop. Does this complicate things? Anyone had any good or
bad experiences with Seagate, Western Digital, Iomega, Toshiba, etc.?

Yes, it can do.

Its no coincidence that all of those only have 1 year warrantys.

I prefer to buy the housing separately from the drive so the
drive retains the full 3-5 year warranty on the drive itself.

And I use Samsung drives because they are nice and cool running and quiet too.

And I use a housing that cools the drive properly. Most dont.
