Extension card recognition

I have just upgraded from SE to XP and discovered that
the applications that do not work are those connected to
two extension cards (COM3 COM4, FaxModem, GPS) (LPT2,
Iomega). These ports did not appear in control
panel/system/Hardware/device manager. I forced them
manually, but now they show as a problem.

What exact protocol should I follow to have them back in
the family and in proper standing.

Thank you

Pierre

Since I get the message that the port does not exist,
which I never got for the other applications connected to
the other ports, and since I got this msg for all the
ports for these two cards, I got it that it was a pure HW
problem and not one of drivers. I never heard of drivers
for a port before. Certainly I got XP drivers for at
least two applications calling these ports since I
installed these applications anew after deinstall which
should have gotten rid of the 98 drivers and used the XP
ones. Or are there really drivers for LPT and COM ports.
Thanks

Sorry, I misread part of your post. You're correct that there ususally
wouldn't be drivers for a port card. Are these plug and play PCI cards?
I assume so since apparently Win 98 recognized them It's possible that
there is a compatibility issue with these cards and XP.

I suggest, if you can identify the manufacturer, that you research their XP
compatibility. The following link points to the MS XP Hardware
Compatibility listing of multiport serial cards. There are some lpt cards
there also.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ca...ryl3&pgn=4a22355d-1525-453e-90cb-3b30f5d61c12
I would also try to look at the manufacturer's websites if possible.

(If you have trouble with that lengthy link go to
http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/catalog/ , select the hardware tab, and
follow the options. These are under other hardware)

Good luck.

These are simple extension cards that I had added after
purchase as inexpensive as possible for just working with
the Iomega, the analog modem and a spare one that found
its use with the GPS.
Incidentally DManager also reports a problem with a PCI
serial port which I cannot identify out of all the ports
PS2, COM, USB, LPT whatnot already screwed at the back of
the machine.
As son as the sweltering weather permits I will poke into
the machine to identify manufacturers as you recommend.

Thank you,

Pierre
PS, the funny thing is that on cold reboot the Iomega
drive and the modem are detected as new hardware (but
installation fails). How come this is possible if the
COM/LPT ports are unrecognized? This Windows does not
shed much light

Thank you.
