there is some option which I thought I once had checked in '03, which
basically lets you roll over a calendar event and have the full text of the
note (if not visible initially) pop up while you're hovering.

Anyone know?

Are you talking about AutoPreview?

there should be a view called Day/Week/Month with preview - if preview
fails, try resetting it. Right click on the bottom border of the row of day
names (it takes some practice to get the right spot) and choose customize
from the menu.

I'm not quite clear about the bottom row of day names comment. Where is this?

I got the rest, but don't understand that last step.

There is a row of field names across the top of the view - Sunday, Monday
etc. if you right click below the bottom of those names, just at the point
where the field name ends and the date cell begins, you'll get a menu that
has Customize... at the bottom.

(In table views you would right click on the row of field names to get this
same menu. )
