Hello,

I am setting up a new network with one Windows2000 PDC with Active directory
zones and 2 WinXP client PCs. I am also using a Linksys router. I have all
internal zones created and working. I am tring to figure out how the
Registered Domain Name fits into this puzzle and how the external Domain
Namespace works. I am tring to set up a simple SMTP Virtual server to
recieve e-mail. Do I have to add the IP of the Internet Domain Name to the
NAT table? I already installed the IIS services and SMTP. Does anyone have
any comments or articles I can read on this particular subject?

Thanks,

John

1 .local DNS will point to external DNS
2. external DNS will map all requests made to your registered DN and SMTP to
your external IP.

(which means that there should be a MX and www record in your external or
ISPs dns pointing to your ip.)

3.the linksys router will forward all requests on port 80 and 25 from your
external ip to your IIS/SMTP server.

Thanks, so do I tell the place where we registered the DN to point the DN to
the External IP of our router? Also, do I need a static IP from our ISP?

Thanks,

John

Hi John.

Configure your AD domain controller to use forwarders that point to your ISP dns
server so that your internal users can have internet name resolution. If your
internal domain name and external domain name are the same then you will need to
create static host records in your AD dns zone for external domain resources for the
internal users since as far as they are concerned the AD dns server is authoritative
for your domain and failed name requests for the domain will stop there. If the
domain names are different, they will find needed records from the ISP dns servers.

Yes , if u want to host your own website and email.

Also, do I need a static IP from our ISP?
Yes.

I thought this was more complecated than it seems to be. I went to
Register.com where we registered our DN and at their site you can change/add
the MX record and change all DNS setting that pertain to the external name
space so this clears up a lot of confusion.

Thanks,

John

if u want to host an email server then u will need to get your register to
point the MX drectly to your ip.

Hi Robert,

I thought that I had this figured out but not quite yet. The main problem
is that I want to host the e-mail account locally but host the Wbsite
offsite. When I went to change the external MX record for our Internet
Domain Name at Register.com. I see that it just points to another DN
instead of pointing directly to an IP address which is what I want to do. So
now I am not sure what to do?
