My enclosure, formatted 300 gig Maxtor inside, but XP SP2 doesn't see
it, or will only format to 127 gig.

Anyway of "correcting" that?

PLEASE tell me it's a Windows XP Update Patch to blame! ;)
USB 2.0 ain't workin' right if you hadn't noticed!

T obe truthful - I hadn't - what seems to be the problem? I'm assuming
this enclosure won't take a HD larger then 120 or so.

What type of enclosure? I have (and still have) two enclosures that won't
take a drive larger than 80 GB, one that limits a replacement drive to 120
GB and I have replaced the drive in a SympleTech enclosure (160 GB original
drive) with a 300 GB WD drive.

You say the drive is formatted to 300 GB. Where was it formatted to that
size? Certainly not in the drive enclosure you currently are using. XP SP2
by default should recognize the drive with no problem.

Go to Computer manager, Disk Management and look at the bottom right window
for the drive in question. What does it show as the drive size and
formatted partition size?

I've come to the conclusion that it IS the enclosure - I find it hard
to believe that the USB->IDE circuit is "limiting", but when the new
enclosure arrives I'll see.

It was formatted IN the machine as 300.

Well, if it was formatted internally in the computer, it is most likely the
enclosure. BTW SimpleTech is having a sale on USB/Firewire enclosures that
will support the 300 GB drive. Just received two of them. Work like a
charm. $39.99 with free shipping. Like that enclosure because it is also
Firewire.
