What is the purpose of the L-shaped Expresscard 54?
I've never even seen a card shaped like that.
Why not just make the socket for them 34mm wide, so the thing fits in there
right, rather than being able to slide towards the front?

The socket at the back of the slot is roughly 34 mm wide. However some
cards require more space than the 34 mm width that the narrow card offers.
This is usually because the connectors on the other end can't fit onto the
end of 34 mm wide card and require the exta width of a 54 mm card (and of
course the circuit board has to be wide enough to connect to them). It is
also possible that the circuitry inside the card won't fit into a 34 mm card
but that is less likely these days.

Yep, that would be the one.
I've had a couple of our sales people that needed the 34mm card.
In one of their laptops, it seems to be a sloppy fit.

A lot would depend on the design of the plastic around the slot. On my
laptop the 34mm cards are firm enough that they work without problems
(though the only 34mm card that I have is a 2 port eSATA card.
