Exporting OE Addresses

I'm having a problem moving my addresses into Vista Mail. At first I
thought it was a Windows Mail problem, but now I think it is an OE problem.
When I export my address book, about 2/3 of the entries do not get the first
and last name fields exported. Only the full name field. This makes it
impossible to sort these 2/3 by last name in Windows Mail (the other 1/3
works just fine). I can see no difference in the OE address book between
those that export and those that do not. They all definitely have first and
last name fields populated in OE. I looked at the csv export file and
confirmed that these fields are not in the Excel spreadsheet. I made sure
that I checked first and last names on the list of fields to export.

Curiously, and perhaps related, after I import to Windows Contacts, if I
open one of the bad entries and then close it, the first and last name
fields get populated. I'm not sure where this data is coming from, and
there doesn't seem to be a global way to fix this problem. Anyone have any
suggestions?

I exported the contacts list from OE in my old Win98 box to a flash drive
using the 'Windows Address Book' (WAB} format. moved the flash drive to new
machine and from address book in Vista, import contacts and select WAB mode.
Worked fine.

My only problem -and someone please help me here-
is that groups that were perviously set up or new ones created in Windows
Mail are nearly indistinguishable from simple contact entries. Formerly,
Groups were shown in bold and there were some more sorting options. Perhaps
I missed something but this is far from optimal

Thanks - Oppie

Oops - first message sent in newsgroups on new Vista machine and somehow
'Microsoft Support' got entered into wrong field. Fixed it now...

Thats the way it is now. Each items is a .contact file and other than a few
tweaks here and there, notice how it looks like Windows Exporer? That's why
the groups are not bold.

Which is exactly why it stinks. So now I have to set up a damn database to
sort the .contacts and .groups? hopefully there will be some widget to do
this.

Arrrgh!

OK, Experience is a good thing and I now recant part of my rage against the
contact list.

I was focusing on the contacts list that got imported from the old machine.
Yes, it does look messy and difficult to read.... *but* if you are starting
a mail message and click the address book icon to the left of the 'To:" you
will find the feel of the OE style address select. That is with everything
in alphabetical order with the Groups in bold font. Ok, so we lost the
Folders and shared lists but this may be just another way to go at it. Time
will tell.

Another thing I realized was that when searching messages, for example by
sender, that the option in edit > find... was now gone. It now moved to the
top right of the windows mail screen. Actually a more functional place for
this.

Hang in there -Oppie-
