Export PPT to Gif problem

I'm exporting PPT's to Gif images using Powerpoint 2002.
Each time I do certain slides with white backgrounds show
up with "Polka dots". I'm uncertain why this is happening
and does not happen with Powerpoint 2000. JPEG's exported
from 2002 are fine also.

Does anyone know of a patch that fixes this?
 
It's probably dependent upon the slide content.
GIFs are only 256 colour and can have a custom palette optimised to the
colours in the image. If there are too many colours a dither pattern is
often used to give the impression of more colours (e.g. a pattern containing
blue and white pixels can look like pale blue).
Or maybe that's not it...
(The reason the JPEGs would be OK is that they don't need palette
optimisation).
