I am trying to export outlook 2000 contacts from my laptop to update my pc
which uses outlook 2002. I believe my problem is that the file on the CD,
when backed up, shows it as read only. However when I see the file on the
laptop, it is not read only. I cant import into the pc from the cd, and I
cant change the file on the cd. Any recommendations. I have done this before,
but its been a while and I easily forget things these days. Thank you for the
help

Exporting and importing are never the right way to transfer Outlook data.
They are, however, good ways to lose data.
Assuming you've already incurred and can live with that damage, you must
move this PST file to a hard drive, remove its read only attribute in
Windows Explorer, then open it in Outlook: File > Open > Outlook Data file
in order to retrieve whatever information it may still contain.

Russ, Thank you for the reply. How do you suggest that I transfer my contacts
from my laptop to my pc? Im not locked into any way, since my contacts on my
laptop are more complete and never erased.

I greatly appreciate the asisstance.

Normally one just copies the PST file and opens it in the other
installation, thus avoiding the export/import routine.

So your saying I can copy the pst file on my laptop, rename it and e-mail it
to my PC, then open the file on my pc's outlook and save it on that machine?

No need to rename it. Most people just burn it on a CD since its a large
file to email, and you have to reset Outlook's Security settings to access
it from email.
