Hello! My small family business has a large email
distribution newsletter we send out. I have Outlook'03
and my family has Outlook'02. I did some Contact
updating for them (adding and deleting contacts to 36
different distribution lists). When I exported my
changes and tried to import them into their Outlook'02, I
got an error message. I then tried exporting to Excel
and this worked except no distribution lists were
exported to Excel because there is no field stored in
Outlook for Distribution lists (that I know of). Can
anyone suggest a solution to my problem?
Thanks so much!

Outlook exports DLs only to .pst files. You won't get them in an export to
Excel.

You might find it easier to use a single .pst file and just copy it back and
forth.

Thank you so much Sue! This explains what was happening
to the DL's. However, I did use a single .pst file the
first time and got an error. Since my family lives in
another city (about 45 minutes away), I cannot retry this
and send you the error message today. I will be going
there tomorrow and will try this again and note the exact
words of the error message. Also, when exporting to
a .pst file, does it matter if we select "replace
duplicates" or not?

I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

Make sure that you're using an Outlook 97-2002 format .pst file for the
export target file. I would use a clean file each time, so you don't have to
worry about duplicates. ("Don't replace duplicates" doesn't always work.)

Thank you so much for your help Sue. I need a
clarification. From your response below, I interpret it
to mean that I must be using an Outlook 97-2002
format .pst as my export target file and everything
should work. However, my situation is the opposite. I
am the one that has Outlook 2003 and my family has
Outlook 2002. I updated my contacts lists and
distribution lists in Outlook 2003. I don't believe
Outlook 2003 allows me to make a lower version .pst
file. Yesterday, I opened my sisters Outlook 2002
contacts, created a new contacts folder and tried to
import my Outlook 2003 .pst file. The error message
below is what I got back "The file C:\contacts033004.pst
is not compatible with this version of the Personal
Folders information service. Contact your administrator."

Am I out of luck in trying to find a way to convert my
contacts (using Outlook '03) to contacts (using
Outlook '02)?

Thanks for your patience Sue.

Yes, Outlook 2003 allows you to create a down-level compatible file. Use
File | New | Outlook Data File and choose Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders
File.
