Sorry to post this question - I do not seem to be able to find an answer on
the web.

I'm running Moviemaker 2.1. After nicely having imported from DV quality
camera (Panasonic) and prepared a film with MM the only way I find to export
DV-AVI is to copy it back to the camera/tape !!
After I start the wizard to save a movie file and I select to save it t hard
disc, I can only save it in WMA format (????). There are no options to
select DV-AVI !!!
The only time I find DV-AVI export possibility is when I select save back to
camera.

What am I doing wrong ??

maybe you're not selecting 'show more options...' as you step thru the
saving to your computer wizard .. right after selecting the folder and file
name.

PapaJohn,

thank you for taking the time to react. Unfortuantelty your suggestion does
not work.

When I select the wizard to save the film, I get a choice between 5 options
(on the PC, the CD, Email, the Web and DV camera).

When I select to PC I define the file name in the next screen and then I
have 3 options (only !!):

1) Best quality for this PC (It then saves in WMA version 160 kbps) !!
2) Define file size
3) Other options (and then I get ONLY Audio choices !!!)

By the looks of it it seems that I can only save AUDI !?!?O - Weird. Would
there be something wrong with Codecs. I seem to be able to work with all my
other vidoe software w/o problems.

Appreciate your comments

That would be appropriate if there are only clips on the music/audio track
of your project's timeline.... and one way to get to that condition would be
to import MPEG-2 files that Movie Maker treats as audio only ones instead of
video/audio... one of the problems with using MPEG-2 files.

If that's your case, then it's a matter of converting the MPEG-2 files to
AVI before using them in Movie Maker.

Hello,
The only time I find DV-AVI export possibility is when I select save back
to
camera.

That is not an option when sending to a DV Camera. Its not mentioned
anywhere...
What am I doing wrong ??

Either your program is totally corrupt (not impossible, but not very
likely), or you are not reading the screeen properly (Don't take offence you
would be surprised how many people are guilty of that...me included)
or.....Are you using any MPrg Video or MP3 audio ? If yes then try
converting the MPeg to AVI or WMV before using in your project and convert
any MP3 to WAV as well. If you need a converter go to
www.videohelp.com/convert The best source on the web for all matter relating
to home user video editing etc etc...

As you're already on this subject I hope you won't mind me posting a further
question. I have a Casio camera which uses the M4S2 codec and records
640*480 video at 30fps (NTSC), and very nice video it is too. MM5.1 only
offers DV export in PAL, not NTSC, so even at full DV filesize I lose motion
smoothness in my video.

Is there any way to import/edit/export M4S2 video in native format ? This
would preserve not only the quality but the compact file size as well.

Cheers

Hi Blewyn,

The notes on the Digital Camcorders < DigiCams page of my website is growing
lately as more and more digital cameras take higher quality videos... I need
to add my notes about a Casio.

I have a sample file from a Casio EX-Z750 (640x480 at 30 fps - NTSC) that
has an AVI extension and GSpot says it was compressed with the M4S2 codec. I
was able to copy the file from the camera without installing any special
software. It imports and works fine in Movie Maker without having to do a
conversion first.

Is that your model camera?

Hello,

As with my latest Difital Still camera you should find in the manual the
method for setting the output from the camera to either PAL or Never The
Same Colour twice.

Movie Maker also offers that ability...check the help file that comes
with the program.

Yes that's the one. What I'd like is to be able to edit the movie and
then write it to an AVI file with the same codec - M4S2 - because this
preserves the native quality and compression of the file. As I can't
do that at present, I have to resort to either a)DV codec (large files)
or b) WMV or DivX codec, with inevitable loss in quality. I can't
understand why the M4S2 codec isn't available for use on the PC.

I understand that PapaJohn, but what I'm saying is that although the
files play OK, it doesn't seem to be possible to write a file back to
this M4S2 codec once the movie has been edited, which means the user is
forced to use DivX or WMV (which results in quality loss since you are
transferring from one lossy format to another) or full DV (which
results in very large files).

Hi Blewyn,

.... so you've got 2 of your 3 needs covered... importing and editing.

You're right. Movie Maker won't be able to help you with the 3rd one, saving
the edited movie using the M4S2 codec... to preserve quality it would be
full DV from Movie Maker and then use Virtual Dub to recompress it using
another codec.
