The explorer window unexpectedly resizes itself and alternates continually
between normal size and full screen size. This occurs in IE6 and Firefox, and
occassionally in a windows explorer page. The only way to stop the effect to
to keep tapping the esc key until it stops.
All software is upto date, inclusing Java.
All temp files and cookies are deleted regularly.
No error message is displayed, and can't see anything that relates in the
event log.
Antivirus (Norton) is upto date.
Spybot runs/fixes regularly.

Try disabling Third Party Browser Helpers (Internet Settings\Advanced tab)
The only thing that I can think of that is doing this is the MSNSearch
toolbar with tabbed browsing because it retains window state information
about the browser in the registry. (actually it fakes tabs with multiple
windows overlayed on top of each other!)
Disabling BHO's should confirm it if it is installed.
To fix it choose the toolbar options and choose retore defaults.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for that, seems fine now...
Hoovering 6 months of dust out of those hard to reach places didn't do any
harm either. LOL!
