I have been told repeatedly that I should "repair internet
Explorer", but when I allow AOL Computer Check to do it, a
small box appears saying that "internet explorer cannot be
repaired" and to "go to set-up" again to "reinstall". When
I try to do it MYSELF, I get the same stupid box. I know
that whatever is wrong with I/E is affecting Outlook, and
my ability to access work mail from home, but I don't know
what else to do, other than go to another level of Windows
(I have 98 now), but the last thing I want to do is buy
ANYTHING else from Microsoft! They just ignore your pleas
for help.. Any suggestions?

try this then get back.

try this to repair IE, click

Start > Run

then enter exactly (case/space-sensitive) copy/paste it in.

rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance

this will give you the IE Repair dialog... proceed to repair IE - re-boot
and see if
this helps.
