What happened to the menu bar with File, View, etc.? And I don't suppose
there's a way to remove the OS information from the desktop?

Also, Vista does not shut my computer down automatically, for shutting down
or going to standby mode.
 
Hit the Alt key and the menu bar will appear. You can set it to always be
there too...

Alt | T | O | View tab | Check "Always show menus" | Click Apply | Click OK
