I like to view files within explorer in a "list" view and to be sorted
by file type. XP frequently decides on it's own that such order isn't
appropriate for me. When I open My Documents, it's lost the sorting and
the view. I've set these parameters globally and repeatedly.. I've set it
to apply the view to all folders and I've told it to remember each folders
view settings..

Why doesn't this stick?

Jakester,

Increasing the folder settings cache solves this problem. See this note from MVP Kelly:

Windows [XP] remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by adding this edit to the registry.

Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:

Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2):

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
