Explorer slow to find drives after Cameras installed

After connceting any camera device, including via USB or Firewire, Windows
Explorer takes an exceedingly long time to locate the drives. The flashlight
icon searches for up to 1-2 minutes before the drives on 'My Computer' are
displayed. Removing the device does not correct the problem. The problem also
occurs when trying to locate files from within a program ,such as Word etc.
It seems as though it is trying to refresh or searching for the drives again
each time it is opened.

This problem does not occur when :
Using the Network Explorer 'My Network Places', including opening a drive on
the same computer that is shared
Booting Windows in Safe mode
Before a camera or Video is connected.
When other devices, such as external drives or PCI cards are conncected

A System Restore to a time before the connnection solves the problem, but
the camera is no longer installed! Scanner and Camera Wizard appears to take
a long time to open. I am wondering if there is a problem with this program
that is altering a system file?

I am running XP Home SP2, recieve regular updates and AVG Antivirus.
The Registry has been cleaned

Any Ideas appreciated
 
They're camera shy <G>.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Not yet as it is not Camera specific. It happens with a Canon EOS SLR, with
a JVC DV camcorder and with a Logitech QuickCam. All by different
manufacturers.

I tried removing all the camera installation files installed by Canon, and
the problem persists. I guess I should contact them anyway to see if they
have received similar problems.

I have tried the fix previously suggested to people with a similar problem
at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm line 157 to disable the
automatic refresh but to no avail.

I have watched the problem develop. I can install a Camera and watch as the
Device is recognised and the drivers are installed. Explorer still works.
Just as the process nears completion is when I lose Explorer's ability to
recognise the drives quickly.

Does this help - appears to be some problem with WIA. Am unable to start

Have tried the fixes as suggested by Microsoft. Unfortunately, the only fix
of use - terminating WIA services is not possible as it is already terminated.

I have just posted to the error logs, and it appears that WIA is terminating
unexpectedly, which may be the error. The question is, why is WIA terminating
or failing to start?
 
Start , Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Click on Windows
Image Acquision and check that the StartUp type is automatic and it has
started.

I have restored system to working state, so can use 'My Computer' and see
drives. Cameras not installed.

to be wrong. It seems to ahead of time. It does not match the time in
your message headers!

I did not comment on another error in your previous post. This links

Resolving the 18042prt driver error does not, however, resolve the
camera error.

The camera problem could be one of it's related drivers. Have you
checked for updated third party (not Microsoft) drivers?

The problem is resolved....I hope

After your last response, I went through and noted that I had DEP turned off
for Generic Host processes for WIN32 Services as I was getting errors on
boot. This error occurred on Boot

Knowing that svchost.exe was the bug, as WIA is started from this, I seached

This post hinted at a conflict or driver error of a device. The last post on

This post/page mentioned HP printer issues could be the cause, and funnily
enough, I run an HP photosmart 2610 networked via the router. Went to HP and
downloaded an update to correct this error on boot. After installing this
update, no issues with DEP message and WIA now working with no error
messages. I do have the HP update manager installed, but it seems to have
left this one off the list of updates.

Have just installed Logitech Webcam and have all drives visible...Happy day.
Can't believe that a ^&*#* Printer driver could cause such trouble.

As an aside, the time conflicts you noted is because I post from the
Antipodes and the message is time stamped in US time.

The article described was close to the answer, but not quite.

The Article mentions certain HP Printer models, not the one I have, and also
talks about stopping WIA services as the answer.

Turns out the issue was with an HP 2610 printer causing a fault in generic
host processes for win32 on boot, stopping WIA service from starting. Once
the update from HP was applied, WIA could start and the problem was solved...
 
The HP Photosmart 2610 is an all in one incorporating a scanner. HP
Scanners have caused problems with WIA in the past as evidenced by KB
819017 posted by Ramesh. It's funny how life goes round in never ending
circles.

Sorry I could help you to a quicker solution but my last post was
suggesting investigating drivers.

The problem is resolved....I hope

After your last response, I went through and noted that I had DEP
turned off for Generic Host processes for WIN32 Services as I was
getting errors on boot. This error occurred on Boot

Knowing that svchost.exe was the bug, as WIA is started from this, I

This post hinted at a conflict or driver error of a device. The last

This post/page mentioned HP printer issues could be the cause, and
funnily enough, I run an HP photosmart 2610 networked via the router.
Went to HP and downloaded an update to correct this error on boot.
After installing this update, no issues with DEP message and WIA now
working with no error messages. I do have the HP update manager
installed, but it seems to have left this one off the list of updates.

Have just installed Logitech Webcam and have all drives
visible...Happy day. Can't believe that a ^&*#* Printer driver could
cause such trouble.

As an aside, the time conflicts you noted is because I post from the
Antipodes and the message is time stamped in US time.

I did not comment on another error in your previous post. This links
gives possible explanations:

Resolving the 18042prt driver error does not, however, resolve the
camera error.

The camera problem could be one of it's related drivers. Have you
checked for updated third party (not Microsoft) drivers?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not
checked.

You provided two further Event Viewer error reports referring to the
Windows Search Service. What is the status of Outlook Express on the
computer? Whilst it is unlikely Outlook Express will have any direct
connection to the problem I am wondering whether a non-functioning
service of this ilk might?

WIA is set to automatic startup and have installed UPHClean
I have restored system to working state, so can use 'My Computer'
and see drives. Cameras not installed.
WIA still fails to start as shown in error msg

Start , Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Click on
Windows Image Acquision and check that the StartUp type is
automatic and it has started.

The article described was close to the answer, but not quite.

The Article mentions certain HP Printer models, not the one I have, and also
talks about stopping WIA services as the answer.

Turns out the issue was with an HP 2610 printer causing a fault in generic
host processes for win32 on boot, stopping WIA service from starting. Once
the update from HP was applied, WIA could start and the problem was solved...
