Explorer problem with date/time widths

This is a re-post as I have had no response in a week...

I like the new menu option to size all columns to fit but the problem is
that Explorer doesn't quite remember the width of the Date Modified column.
It gets set OK but when I come back to the folder that column is just a
little bit too narrow and the date is obscured. It may have something to do
with the fact that I have a date format like 15-Mar-2007 which is
non-standard. Anyone else experienced this and can it be fixed? The
platform is Vista Ultimate x64. Try it for yourself: set your date format
(in Regional Settings) to be like 15-Mar-2007 HH:MM and see what happens
with Explorer.

Right-click the 'Date modied' header (Details view) > More..
Then click on 'Date Modified'
Then adjust the number in the 'Width of the selected column (in pixels)' eg
to 150

Should then be the same when you return to the folder.

Nope, I tried manually adjusting it to 112 but every time I return to the
folder it reverts to 104. Every other column setting is remembered. This
is happening in every folder.

Can someone else actually try setting their date/time format to dd-MMM-yyyy
HH:MM and see if it happens to them too? I am pretty sure it's a bug.

I'll probably regret asking this stupid question... ;-)

I can't find the menu option you are talking about. Where is it?

Thanks

If you right-click on the column header region in Windows Explorer you will
see a menu option "Size All Columns to Fit". It works except for the Date
Modified column when the date format is set to dd-MMM-yyy. At least that's
what it looks like to me but no one has confirmed this yet :-(

Could someone please just try this and report back if they experience the
same problem? Please?

Just go into the Control Panel->Regional Options and change your date format
to dd-MMM-yyy and your time format to HH:MM (you can always set it back
again later). Then select Size All Columns to Fit in Explorer, move to
another folder and then come back to the original folder. In my system, the
Date Modified column is no longer sized correctly whereas all other columns
are. Does this happen to you too?

Hello,

I gave it a try. Unfortunately, I don't have the exact format choices you
have in your message. the closest I could get to the "15-Mar-2007" format is
"dd-MMM-yy" (you had listed "dd-MMM-yyy" but I assumed that was a typo). The
closest I could get to the "HH:MM" format is "HH:mm:ss".

But I tried them anyway using the steps you listed. It seems to work fine
for me. I tried it on a second Vista Ultimate PC (English version) and it
worked there as well. Sorry.

Thank you for trying that. Yes, it was a typo - it should have been
dd-MMM-yyyy and HH:mm:ss. Maybe it's the extra two digits in dd-MMM-yyyy
that causes the problem (you say you tried dd-MMM-yy). Could you try it
with the extra digits?

I tried it with the maximum number of characters allowed for the date (8
characters: MM/dd/yyyy) and the time (8 characters: hh:mm:ss tt) and it still
works fine for me. I don't have a "dd-MMM-yyyy" choice. Could that be a
European-thing?

No, you need to type it in manually rather than choosing it from a list.

Duh! (the second one in the same thread...not a good sign). Sorry for not
catching that in the first place. I changed to the "dd-MMM-yyyy" format and
tested it per your instructions. It works fine for me...I see all the
date/time characters after returning to the folder.

Have you tried a second PC to see if you can duplicate the problem? Don't
know if this is viable under your circumstances...but there is always System
Restore (assuming this problem did not exist for you at some point and you
know about when it started). Good luck...wish I could have helped more.

Oh well, thanks very much for trying to help out. I have now changed the
date format to dd-MMM-yy and the problem has gone away so I will stick with
that. Although, I have just noticed that the Size column suffers from a
similar problem when the size of one or more items exceed 8 digits in length
and the others are shorter. It's annoying but I guess I have to live with
it.
